National Road Victim Awareness Month
Posted by Jessica Taylor on Aug 22, 2024
National Road Victim Month was first founded by the charity RoadPeace back in 1998.
This annual campaign was organised by RoadPeace, (which is the UK’s national charity for road crash victims) to help spread awareness of the risks and importance of road safety, and to help those affected access support.
National Road Victim Month is a reminder to:
- Highlight the shocking statistics of road victims in the UK, which is an average of 5 people killed and 80 people seriously injured every day.
- Understand how we can collectively be more aware of the risks and more mindful when driving on the roads.
- Show those affected by car accidents and incidents empathy, kindness and understanding.
- Honour the diligent work of the emergency services and first-person responders.
From a survey in 2014[1], 89% of people’s journeys were made by road, the majority being by car or van. Because so many of us are on the roads every day, it’s important that we acknowledge the risks and practice road safety, so that we can mitigate the danger and provide safer roads for all of us.
In honour of this month, here are 7 top road safety tips to keep you safe on the roads:
- Try your best to stay focused and avoid distractions
- Try to keep both hands on the wheel to maintain control
- Don’t drive tired! Take plenty of breaks
- Always obey the speed limits!
- Adjust your speed to road conditions
- Keep a safe distance from the vehicles around you
- Mirror, signal, manoeuvre!
