Preparing for AI

An NHS analysis

Posted by Joshua Archibald on Aug 29, 2024

It has been widely reported in recent years that the NHS are facing a workforce crisis from high demand and insufficient staffing to meet the workload. This has led to long delays for patients and causes enhanced stress for NHS employees.

The key solution that has been discussed to overcome this issue is the NHS implementing artificial intelligence. It is believed that AI can speed up many of the processes that are currently manual and can take up a large amount of time for employees. This means that NHS hospitals will be able to efficiently function with less employees.

In June 2023, the UK Government announced a £21m investment in AI tools in the NHS. The issue that has since arisen is regarding the supporting infrastructure to ensure that these AI tools can be utilised.

CEO and Radiologist, Farzana Rahman, states that some hospitals still use paper-based or telephone-based systems, with some hospitals even struggling to get reliable wireless internet connection. The additional funding presents an excellent chance to improve manual processes, but organisations must provide proper training and support during tool implementation to fully benefit. The benefits of using AI for the NHS can already be identified, Addenbrooke hospital in Cambridge is using Microsoft’s InnerEye system to automatically process scans for patients with prostate cancer, saving time and ensuring accurate reports.

Our ICT Managed Services & Consultancy framework covers ICT infrastructure, strategy and planning, consultancy and much more. This can help any NHS based organisation to ensure their systems and infrastructure is ready to facilitate AI implementation.
